The Co-Mission: You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone

We call it The Great Commission: Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples before ascending into heaven:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… And behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
—Matthew 28:19-20
We’ve heard it preached. We’ve memorized it. Maybe even printed it on ministry flyers and mission trip t-shirts. But this morning, something simple struck me fresh.
If the prefix "co-" means “together” or “jointly”…
Then could it be that the Great Commission isn’t just a mission we’ve been assigned, but a co-mission?
Not something we do for God,
but something we do with Him?

Sent With Power
In Acts 1:8, Jesus says:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”
That right there is the difference.
He didn’t say, “Go try your best.”
He didn’t say, “Go impress me.”
He said, “You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses.”
He didn’t just give us a mission—He gave us a Partner.
He gave us the Holy Spirit.
This is a co-mission - God’s Spirit in us, guiding, filling, equipping, and reminding us that we’re not walking alone.

Not Just Called - Commissioned
The word “commission” itself comes from Latin:
  • com- = with, together
  • missio = send
So to be commissioned is literally to be sent together.
You’re not just sent on a mission - you’re sent with God’s presence, on God’s authority, and in God’s power.
That makes a huge difference.
Because too many of us are burning out, wearing ourselves thin, trying to complete a divine assignment with human strength.
But that was never the design.

We Are Co-Laborers
Paul puts it plainly in 1 Corinthians 3:9:
“For we are co-workers in God’s service.”
Let that hit.
God, the Creator of the universe, is not only working through you…
He’s working with you.
He’s not standing far off evaluating your performance.
He’s right there beside you, shoulder to shoulder.
When you speak, He fills your mouth.
When you step out in obedience, He confirms His word with signs and fruit.
When you feel weak, He reminds you: My strength is made perfect in your weakness.

So Don’t Go Alone
If you’ve been walking this out in your own strength, thinking the Great Commission was something you had to grind through and figure out, stop and breathe.
This is a Co-Mission.
You’re not alone.
You’re not expected to carry the weight of the Kingdom on your back.
You’ve been sent together - with the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.
You’ve been invited into a divine partnership.
This isn't just about ministry.
It’s about how we live.
Every act of love, every conversation of faith, every moment of obedience—it’s all part of the
Co-Mission.
He’s with you. He’s in it. And He’s not leaving.
So go.
Boldly.
Faithfully.
But never alone.

Journal with me:
Have I been treating the Great Commission like a solo mission?
Where do I need to invite the Holy Spirit to lead, fill, or carry what I’ve been trying to handle on my own?
