Presence vs Performance

It’s Okay to Be Religious When There’s Relationship
Somewhere along the way, we confused performance with presence.
We started measuring our relationship with God by what we do for Him, instead of how close we walk with Him.
We traded intimacy for image.
We substituted connection with checklists.
And then we wondered why we felt tired, empty, disconnected.
But here’s what I’ve come to realize --

It’s okay to be religious, as long as there’s relationship.
It’s okay to go to church every Sunday, if your heart is in it.
It’s okay to fast, to pray, to worship with raised hands, to follow structure and rhythm in your faith — if it’s flowing from a place of love and intimacy with God.
Because religion isn't the problem.

Empty religion is.

The kind that performs without presence. The kind that serves without sitting. The kind that works for God but forgets to walk with Him.
Jesus was “religious” by outward standards.
He went to the synagogue (Luke 4:16).
He quoted Scripture (Matthew 4:4).
He observed the feasts (John 7:10).
But He never lost His intimacy with the Father. He withdrew to lonely places to pray. He spent time in communion. He moved in power not because of performance, but because of presence.

That’s our model.
God never asked us to perform for Him.
He asked us to be with Him.
Think about Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42).
Martha was doing all the “right” things — hosting, serving, preparing. She was religious in all the ways that looked good.
But Jesus said Mary had chosen what was better.
What had she chosen?

Presence.
Sitting at His feet.
Listening.
Loving.
Receiving.
And then there’s Micah 6:6-8, where the people ask:
“With what shall I come before the Lord… Shall I offer burnt offerings... thousands of rams… rivers of oil?”
And God responds with the heart of it all:
“He has shown you, O man, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Not perform.
Not impress.
Not put on a show.
But to walk with Him. That’s relationship.
John 15:5 says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Notice, He didn’t say, “If you serve enough…” or “If you act holy enough…”
He said, “If you remain in Me.”

Remain. Abide. Stay close.
That’s where the fruit comes from — not through performance, but through presence.
So no, you don’t have to reject religion.
If your religion leads you to Jesus — to love Him deeper, follow Him closer, know Him more truly — then keep going.
Read the Word. Pray the prayers. Worship loudly. Go to church. Tithe. Fast.
But make sure your heart is in it.
Make sure you’re doing it with Him, not just for Him.
Because God doesn’t want your performance.
He wants you.

Don’t let performance replace presence.
Don’t let routine replace relationship.
Don’t settle for religion if it costs you connection.
Let your works flow from love. Let your discipline be drenched in desire.
Let your religion be filled with relationship.

Journal with me:
Where in my life have I been busy doing things for God, but not truly being with Him?
What habits draw me deeper into His presence, and which ones have become performance?
What would it look like for me to sit at His feet today, to listen, to rest, and to choose what is better?
